1How many sessions will I need?
This is perhaps the most frequently asked question about CBT. Every person is different, and the length of the treatment will also depend on the issues you would like to address. An assessment for a better understanding of your difficulties will be needed before this question could be answered. CBT is time-limited; normally, it lasts between 5-20 sessions. Duration of therapy depends on the nature of your problems and on your progress.
2How long does the session last?
The sessions last 50 minutes.
3How often do I need to attend CBT sessions?
CBT sessions are delivered once a week at the beginning of treatment. Some people feel comfortable in attending session every fortnight once they feel better.
4Do I need a referral by my GP or can I refer myself?
You can refer yourself, however if you would like to pay for your treatment through your health insurance company, your health insurer may require you to have a referral by your GP.
5Is everything we discuss confidential?
Yes, as a clinical practitioner I am required to keep everything that is discussed in the session in the strictest of confidence, unless you give me voluntary written consent to do otherwise. However, as part of my own professional development, I will need to discuss the clients I see with my supervisor.
My supervisor is bound by the same ethical guidelines regarding confidentiality as I am.
There are also 3 circumstances in which I would need to break confidentiality:
- If I consider that you are a danger to yourself or others.
- If I or your therapy file is officially summoned in a court case.
- If there is information shared about current child or elder abuse.
6Are results better when the session is delivered face to face?
According to the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies, there is good evidence that therapy can be delivered competently via online platforms or telephone and that it is possible to build up therapeutic relationships that are as strong as those formed in face-to-face therapy.
At a time when most of us lead busy lifestyles Online Therapy is a good option that will save time and the inconvenience of travelling a long way to see a therapist.
7Are parents allowed in teenagers CBT sessions?
Research shows that parent involvement makes the young person therapy more effective. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll be present during all sessions. I sometimes advice one parent to be present in part of an important session when ideas and plans are drawn for the teenager’s recovery.
8What is the cancellation policy?
I require 48 hours (two working days) notice if you need to cancel an appointment, i.e., Monday appointments need to be cancelled by the previous Thursday. You will be charged for any missed appointments, or appointments that are cancelled without appropriate notice.
Appointment slots are valuable; therefore, your advanced notification of any cancellations is much appreciated.
